Bam and it's Cultural Landscape

One & Only

“Mile of Nader” in Fahraj

City Garden of Bam

Bam is situated in a desert environment on the southern edge of the Iranian high plateau. The origins of Bam can be traced back to the Achaemenid period (6th to 4th centuries BC). Its heyday was from the 7th to 11th centuries, being at the crossroads of important trade routes and known for the production of silk and cotton garments.

The existence of life in the oasis was based on the underground irrigation canals, the qanāts, of which Bam has preserved some of the earliest evidence in Iran. Qanats are one of the intangible world heritages of Iran; In total a number of 11 qanats are enlisted of which 3 of them are in Kerman and 2 in Bam! Arg-e Bam is the most representative example of a fortified medieval town built in vernacular technique using mud layers (Chineh ).

Nowadays Bam is full of gardens; as a matter of fact, it’s a city garden where the houses are actually big gardens that are being fed by the qanat water and are famous for producing one of the best dates in the world.

Citadel of Bam

The Biggest & Oldest Adobe Structure in The Word

Although we know that the citadel was built about 2,500 years ago; the new excavations show that there are layers below that can be traced back to much more time ago and early civilizations.

However the most compelling aspect of Arg e Bam is it was always inhabited and as a result was always improved during the millenniums.

The other important aspect of Arg-e Bam is that all religions lived there in peace and harmony. You can still see that they had neighborhoods where muslims, jews and zoroastrians lived next to each other and without apparent difficulties.

Bam is about 200 km far from Kerman; so, going there and coming back to Kerman should take about 5 hours. However, the good news is that you can visit Shazdeh Garden of Mahan and Citedel of Rayen on the way.

Fahraj

Off-Road Experience in Yalan Sand Dunes of Bam

Fahraj is one of the special places in Kerman as well. You can sense the history over there, castles, ruins, a hidden branch of silk road (spice road), Miles (tall towers in line so that the caravans can track there path and not get lost in desert) and finally the massive Yalan sand dunes.

There are large scale plantations in Fahraj as well and trees such as orange, grapefruit and tangerine. The Bam region is famous for such fruits as well and the quality is quite high.

However the main reason that we are recommending Fahraj is that in this region you can get a taste of famous Yalan sand dunes by going off-road, loose yourself in the immense desert and have the best time of your life!
