2 Days Tour of Lut desert | Kaluts, Jahar & Keshit Canyon
In this two-days tour we will take you to fascinating Dasht-e Lut (Iran’s first natural world heritage); and give you the best experience possible in this short amount of time. First we will explore the Kaluts of Shahdad and all the attractions nearby. later, we go to our base which is small gorgeous oasis in middle of the desert where the people are the most kind and the landscape is unforgettable. Finally, we will visit the sand dunes nearby and go to Keshit village to swim in the mesmerizing canyon and visit the historical castle.
Itinerary
Day 1:
We will start our trip around 2 pm* and go towards the Lut desert through Palvar mountains.
In Lut we will visit a water reservoir in Shahdad town, Nebka Mounds, qanat systems (ancient water system in Iran), Salt River, remains of the dried lake and Egg Hills. Later on we reach the Kalouts before sunset and spend as much time as we want over there.
Finally, we head for the Jahar village where our local guide will be waiting to welcome us with hospitality, food and provide us with a homestay experience (we have the option to camp in sand dunes nearby).
Day 2:
Waking up early in the morning with our local guide we go to sand dunes to see the sunrise there. After spending enough time there and by 30 minutes of off-road driving we’ll reach our next destination; Keshit oasis. In Keshit we will visit the old citadel (which is among the most vast and alluring ones in Kerman) and go for a swim in a crack in middle of desert.
Later we go back to Jahar for having our lunch and for the last part of our tour we will explore the village.
Eventually we will say farewell to our local friend and leave Jahar for Kerman.

Ali was my guide in early July 2019. At first day we went to see the sunset to Kaluts. The view was magnifisent and looked like we were in another planet. After dark went to have dinner at local's house in Jahar oasis, slept there. Next morning we got up at 4:45 to see the sunset on the huge sand dunes. Again, the landscape was very Mars-like. Then our local guide from the village took me and Ali offroad/shortcut to the canyon, where there was a small waterfall that forms a pool where we could swim. Very refreshing. Then back to Jahar to rest a little and have a lunch. In the afternoon we went to the hot areas where I reached my personal record: 51 degrees celcius. On the way there Ali showed a watermelon farm. After the heat hotspot we started our journey back to Kerman. Ali is very professional tour guide. He has plenty of knowledge about the area and Iran's history. He's nice and he listens what YOU want to do. Even changing routes/plans and adding extra (waterfall/pool in my case) is possible. Ali will fulfill all your expectations about the Kaluts trip and he doesn't push you to see/do something you are not interested to do. That's why I'd recommend Ali to be your guide in your Lut desert trip 🙂
We had an Amazing time with Ali. The Lut desert and the Keshit Oasis are beautiful places to visit. Sleeping in the village of Jahar and meeting Reza was a very enriching experience. Ali also taught us about Persian history and allowed us to have taste of the Iranian culture by playing traditional songs and answering all our questions. He is also a great photographer and took some great photos of us!
